Furness School Sport Partnership - Coordinating school sports in Barrow, Dalton & Ulverston.

All schools across the Furness peninsula are a part of the Furness School Sport Partnership. We have the responsibility of delivering the governments National PE, school sport and club links strategy. (PESSCL) for all our 5 - 16 year olds. We are based at Thorncliffe school which is the designated Sports College in the area.

By 2008 we aim to have at least 85% of school children spending a minimum of 2 hours per week doing PE and school sport. The Governments vision for 2010 is to offer all children at least 2 hours of sport within school and 2 hours beyond in the local community.

In our area each secondary school employs a School Sport Coordinator, SSCo, for 2 days per week to work on the programme. Each primary school has a nominated PLT, primary link teacher, who is responsible for the development of PE & School Sport in their school. The primary school receives a grant to support all the developments.

Our schools work in Clusters, where the secondary schools and its local primary schools work together with the SSCo managing the initiative and its progress.

We aim to
  • Increase participation in high quality PE, Out of School Hours Learning, Informal activity, Competition & Performance and community based sport.
  • Improve attitude, behaviour, achievement, attainment in PE and whole school.
