Alfred Barrow School Cluster - School Sports Coordinator Programme

With a quiet first half term, there was lots going on in the second half of the term.
Sports Ambassadors
Our new Sports Ambassadors have been selected for 2008 – 2009. Brad and Shannon have already demonstrated excellent leadership qualities in year 10 and were the obvious choice from all members of the PE department to replace Tom and Lara as Sports Ambassadors. Brad is a keen rugby player and also enjoys boxing while Shannon enjoys trying new sports and has been known to referee the odd rugby game in the past.

At the end of May, Miss Thompson and Mr Moody took a group of 8 Year 10 students to the Snow Dome in Manchester with Parkview School. All of the students and staff had a really great time and are keen to go again – “It was a fun, enjoyable day for staff and pupils alike” (Miss Thompson) Pupils had a snow boarding lesson and had a go on the ‘luge’ and experienced ‘tubing’.(see below!)

Toplink
The Year 10 students, led by Shannon, Brad, Peter, and Dylan have worked hard to organise the Toplink Festival which was held on June 19th. The theme this year was Basketball. Year 6 pupils from St Georges Primary, Barrow Island Primary and Greengate Junior School all attended and had an excellent afternoon. A huge Thank You to Miss Thompson who took over the running of the day in my absence.
Key Stage 2 pupils have had a busy time with Tag Rugby Festivals, Kwik Cricket Tournaments, Football Finals, Swimming Competitions and Athletics competitions to name but a few. Well Done to all the pupils who have taken part and also to all the staff who have organised the teams, transported the teams and trained them. Without the hard work of the staff in the schools, the pupils would not have the sporting opportunities that they do.

Mini Olympics
At the end of last term a Mini Olympic Festival was held for Key Stage 1 children. Ramsden Infants competed against St Georges School and Greengate infants went head to head with Barrow Island. All of the pupils worked hard and really enjoyed the afternoon. The children enjoyed mini hurdles, foam javelin, sprint and standing long jump.

Fun Afternoons
Year 3 and 4 students had the opportunity to enjoy an afternoon of fun activities held at Greengate Junior School. The children took part in bowling, an obstacle course, skipping, balance activities, throwing and catching games and the ‘caterpillar run’ which the yr 3 children were amazing at – better than the yr 10 pupils at Alfred Barrow! It was really nice to see the children enjoying themselves and ‘just playing’.
The caterpillar run.
Mr Irving’s Year 6 class were excellent helpers on both days and I hope that they continue using their leadership skills next year at secondary school.

Greengate Infants
At Greengate Infants we have been having fun following the Activate programme. Some of the comments from the children have been ...
  • It’s awesome because it makes me healthy.
  • It keeps us fit in the morning.
  • I like it when we have a new week, its exciting.
  • It gets your brain working.

  • Inside Out Soccer are running two after school clubs this term. Last half term they did Kwik Cricket, which the children really enjoyed and this half term they are doing Basketball.
We have made a display in our hall for everyone to see, to show the achievement of our gymnastics team. They won the cluster competition and came second in the partnership final.

    St Georges
We have again taken advantage of the Chance to Shine cricket initiative and both Years 5 and 6 have enjoyed these sessions with Alistair.
We have also benefited from recently installed playground markings which will be of great use to all our pupils.
Year 5 and 6 have also greatly enjoyed sessions with the new rugby development Officer Martin Greealish and would like to thank him for all his enthusiasm and patience.
On Tuesday the children also competed in the Barrow Schools athletics meeting at Walney Secondary. Well Done to all who took part.

Congratulations to the Sport Ability team who have been chosen to represent Barrow in the Cumbria Youth Games on July 5th. Mr Coulston and Mr Riley will travel with the team – Hayleigh, Connor, Emma, Leah Patrick and George to Penrith. We wish you lots of luck and look forward to hearing how you got on next term.

    Barrow Island
Mr Alalouf is now fully trained as a Basic Moves Tutor. Basic Moves has been an important part of the day at Barrow Island for over a year now and it has been extremely successful. As a tutor, Mr Alalouf can now share his expertise with the partnership and the success can be shared by all. In a nutshell Basic moves aims to develop the basic movement competence of all children, so as to enable them to take a full and active part in physical education now and into the future. It is about developing a LIFE LONG learning approach to physical activity that will stretch into secondary education and on into adulthood. This is especially relevant in these times of growing obesity rates among young children and early adolescence, where many are turned off participation due to their perceived competence in many aspects of sports. This is the "Can I do it...?" and the "Is it worth it...?" mindset that Basic Moves seeks to address through the delivery of developmentally appropriate experiences that are fully inclusive and supported through delivery in the wider community. The Basic Moves framework helps to develop the technical skills that children require to access games and sports, and the adaptability and creativity to apply these skills in more complex situations. These skills do not develop naturally in children and as such cannot be left to chance if they are to become competent and confident in these basic skills. These are exciting times for the way we view and approach the physical education of our young people, and we in Cumbria are now well placed to take up this challenge and be instrumental in this change. More details regarding the Basic Moves approach and framework can be accessed through our PDM's and SSCO's and myself.
