St Bernards School Cluster - School Sports Coordinator Programme - Updated 04/04/08
School Sport Council gets the views of students
The school Sports Council held its inaugural meeting on 13th March. There was a very good attendance from the year House Captains and Vice-House captains. The discussed the possible introduction of house polo shirts. It was explained that the polo shirts would have a school badge and the house name embroidered on them.
The subject was then opened for discussion from the floor. There were some very good questions.
There was a general discussion as to which sports would require a house polo. The discussion led to all of the girls’ sports, both summer and winter games and for the boys it was accepted that they would not be suitable for football and rugby, but would be good for all of the other sports.
It would be envisaged that the shirts would be in use for the inter-house competitions in the summer term 2008
Two votes were then taken.
1. Would the floor like to keep the current house T shirts?
One person for , 31 against.
2. Would you like to have the new polo shirts?
31 for and 1 abstention.
The general view of the Sports Council was in favour of the introduction of the new house polo shirts
A lot happening at St Pius X School
Mr. Hough has liaised with other staff in the school and, as well as already teaching Years 3,4,5, and 6 in the afternoon when the teachers swap classes to teach their specialism, Mr. Hough is now teaching on the mornings as well with year 1 and Year 3 while helping out in Year 2 in his PPA Times.
We have started new clubs, bought new equipment and been involved in some very exciting opportunities.
The TESCO Voucher Scheme
The TESCO Voucher scheme has always played a significant role in providing schools with new equipment and this year was no different for our school. The children’s School Council and Mr. Hough decided that we would like to improve our ABC club by purchasing new equipment with our vouchers—we now have equipment for Key Stage 1 and 2 and don’t have to worry about it being shared anymore or it not being there when one class needs it. We also decided that we would like to start a Basketball club—last year we were lucky enough to pair up with St. Mary’s School in Ulverston but that had to be cut short so now we have two fold-away Basketball Systems and 15 balls that were provided through Identity in town. The club has been very successful and we can’t wait to start playing games.
Gymnastics development
We have also been improving our Gymnastics and decided to start a club on Friday nights to train for the competitions that we would now like to enter for the first time ever.
Rugby
Rugby has also been given a boost with the addition of two new coaches. Martin, who has taken over from Mark Harper, has been coaching the Year 5’s in TAG skills in lesson time and Mr. McPoland, a parent who has a child in Year 6 has joined up with Mr. Hough to teach Contact Rugby to those who want to learn it after school while Mr. Hough teaches TAG.
Soccer
Inside—Out Soccer have also been into our school and have been involved in school lesson time and after-school teaching all Key Stages Soccer Skills on Tuesday nights.
Our Girls Football Team are preparing themselves for the League after playing a friendly before half term, beating Greengate B Team 8-1.
Netball
Our Netball team has finally started to win games and is opening up to Year 4 now as well as Year 5 and 6.
Swimming & Fitness
We also have a swimming club that trains with Miss. Kolbe at The Park Leisure Centre on a Wednesday night. They have been involved recently in competitions too.
Finally, we are also starting a fitness club this term on two mornings a week before school. We enjoyed working with Diane Singleton earlier this year in Aerobics we thought we would like a club based around fitness that involved Dance and Exercising.
